Jack the Ripper - The Murders

It is generally accepted that there were 5 murders which took place on 4 separate occassions i.e. numbers 3 and 4 occurring on the same night just a short period apart.
Murder # 1 Friday August 31 1888 at 3:30am. Victim May Ann Nichols (Polly) age 42.
Was carried out in Bucks Row a street of both houses, a school and the large premises of Kearley & Tonge, running parallel to the District Railway at Whitechapel.
Murder # 2 Saturday 8 September 1888 at 5:45am (approx). Victim Annie Chapman (Dark Annie) age 45
Was carried out immediately outside the rear door leading to the yard of 29 Hanbury Street. A multiple occupancy house to the western end of Hanbury Street - close to Spitafields Market. A glance at the map will show, in terms of distance, no more than a 15-20 minute walk from Murder site # 1.
Murder # 3 Sunday 30 September at 1am. Victim Elizabeth Stride (Long Liz) age 44
Was carried out in the yard of the Jewish Socialist Club at 44 Berner Street. Berner Street is a mere 150 yards south of Whitechapel Road. No more than a 10-12 minute walk from Site # 1 and about the same time distance from Site # 2. It is certainly the case JTR was disturbed and fled the scene unseen.
Murder # 4 Sunday 30 September at 1:40am. Victim Catharine Eddowes age 43
Was carried out in Mitre Square a small square with a single road entry (but other alleyway entries) mostly surrounded by a large warehouse complex but also some houses - some empty - but one occupied by a Policeman. Again the distance from Site # 3 is about half a mile or no more than 10 minutes walk.
Murder # 5 Friday 9 November in the early hours (approx 3:30 - 5am) . Victim Mary (or Marie) Jane Kelly age 24
She was murdered indoors i.e. in the squalid room she rented in Millers Court Spitafields. In walking distance Site # 5 is less than 5 minutes from Site # 2.

Author's Note: My Paternal Grandmother was born in 1880 in Bermonsey, on the south side of the Thames not far from where Tower Bridge was constructed.( She was one of the first 100 (all children) to cross Tower Bridge
on opening day.) I remember her telling me, in 1956, how as a child of 8 she and the rest of the female population was in terror of Jack the Ripper. For years afterwards, she told me, parents would use the threat of JTR as a means of discipling their children. Victorian equivelant of the Bogey Man.
